Overall I like the general appearance of the scratchpads, but in general I find that the interface could be a bit more economical with desktop real-estate. Margins and spacers are fairly wide and some interfaces are quite wasteful (especially the slickgrid, onw which hopefully more later). One example is the rather large space after each block in the sidebars (now even more problematic as the slickgrid almost forces one to drop the right sidebar to have enough space to accommodate the table). Another example are the image galeries (with a space and a box around each thumbnail, and ample space between the boxes too). I would rather see larger thumbnails than these boxes. I am not aiming to cram in everything, but just a bit more compactness would not harm. I often work on a laptop, where desktop real-estate is especially limited.

Agreed. There will be a bit more standardization of the "Scratchpad 2" instances, specifically to discourage the use of a right hand side bar. This will help prevent users from "crowding out" their work area, especially when they are on a smaller laptop. We will have to manage this process for existing users where they have 2 sidebars already. Also we will be using overlays in those instances (like the grid editor) to give you a full width of the screen. When we started looking at this I wasn't convinced about the overlays because my experience of them is that they are rather transient and only appropriate for casual editing. However, the new versions of this are
much improved. Thus, where you need it, you'll get the full screen width for editing now.
